Sewing machines are simple appliances, which can be utilized to stitch fabric and other fiber together with the help of thread. During industrial revolution, the sewing machine was invented to decrease manual efforts to stitch cloths.

It was introduced in 1790 by an English man – Thomas Saint. Efficiency of the sewing machine has drastically increased over time and the textile industries are increasing in number, day by day, globally.

History of Sewing machine

First Sewing Machine

First Sewing Machine

In early days, folks used to stitch cloths with their hands; they prepared a needle with the help of thin animal bone and sharpened it. The thread was made from animal sinew. In 14th century, iron needles were invented and the first eyed needles were introduced in 15th century.

Types of Sewing Machines

There are three types of sewing machines, but all of them work on the same basic principle.

Mechanical Sewing Machines

A rotary wheel controls the mechanical sewing machine. Any modification to the tension or the width or length of the stitch is developed by a dial. Mechanical sewing machines have become extremely common, and highly inexpensive compared to the remaining types of sewing machines.

Electronic Sewing Machine

With the help of a switch, an Electronic Sewing Machine controls all the operation. By pushing this button, many functions can be carried out. An electronic machine has many rotors for performing various operations and functions with the help of electric supply.

All the switches installed on this sewing machine are programmed by a computer and each function carried by this machine is in accordance to the program embeded in the performance chips.

Working Principle of Sewing Machine

All sewing machines are designed with one basic idea. Like the engine of car, the sewing machine has a loop stitching system, which is the heart of sewing machine.

The approach of loop stitch is slightly different from traditional hand-sewing. All of us know how to stitch with a hand, and a needle. In case of electronic sewing machines, the loop system replaces the human and controls the process of stitching. This stitching is similar to hand-stitch, but it is more efficient than hand-stitch and it is very quick. All functions such as holding the thread and cloth, stitching, and cutting the thread are done in loop stitching by loop stitch system itself.

There are many other methods included in loop stitch mechanism. They have different stitching principles such as chain stitch and lock stitch. The key element in lock stitch mechanism is the shuttle hook and bobbin assembly.
